My KC Adventure

About being a dad and Leading the puppet team at my church

Being a Leader

One of the things that God has to knock through my thick skull is just how seriously He wants me to take this whole puppet ministry thing.

A)  Yes, it is a “ministry”

B)  Puppets are a legitimate art form that combines the visual arts (painting, sculpture, set design, etc) and the performing arts. (acting, singing dance)

C)  As a ministry it is to be done “Unto the Lord.”  Which means pray as if everything depended on God and work as if everything depends on me.

D)  Every ministry needs a leader and this is a wake up call for me to LEAD!

This is why The Holy Spirit’s been pounding my head about how to be a leader.  And

“Gee what a coincidence!”

my church was a host site for A Leadership Conference!

What can I say.  It’s the big thing I have in common with The Apostle Peter.  We’re both a couple of hard headed rednecks!

My Post Easter Puppet Adventure

It would be nice if we found our digital camera so that frustrated photog me could maybe take a picture of my puppets.

(Rather than using stock internet pictures)

Or better yet bribe someone to video them in action.

My puppets names are Elwood and Dimitri.

Elwood is a good name to yell for when he gets in trouble or frustrates his older brother Dimitri.

It’s like a certain chipmunk,

“Elwood, what’s special about Easter?”

“Getting an Easter Basket filled with toys”

“No, try again,”

“Chocolate bunnies!”

“No, try again,”

“An Easter Egg Hunt!”

“ELWOOD! You silly goose!  Jesus rose again on Easter Sunday!”

It’s a good thing I hang out in the KC wing after my puppet show is finished.  Thanks to Daylight Saving Time half of our nine o’clock service kids showed up for the 11 o’clock service.  Which means,

To make matters worse one of the regular teachers was away so they had to combine one of the classes already.  Then when you add the fact an unusual amount were attending our late service,

Thankfully God knows what we need before we ask Him.  And every joint supplies just like the bible says the church is supposed to work.  Especially a church where God has sent so many talented people.

Oh no! They Fired Me!

Yup! It’s true!

They fired me.

On the other hand perhaps that’s too strong a word.

First of all my position in the workplace is secure.  My “job” job is doing just fine.

However they are looking for someone to replace me as a classroom teacher at Kid’s Celebration.  It’s not because I messed up.  They found something better for me to do!

It all started a few months ago when they asked me to help out with a puppet show.

Turns out it was really good.

So they asked me to do another puppet  show.

And another, and another.

It turns out they’ve always wanted to add puppets to the overall Sunday School program.

They just never had the right person to do it.

Until now.

So now,in order to do more and better puppet shows they want to find a replacement for me in the classroom.

There you have it.

That’s how I got fired.

Sort of  😉

And the KC adventure rolls on!

A Godsend on Sunday

At last!

They gave me a helper for my Sunday School class. She was able to help keep me organized and on track. With her help I remembered to pass out all the right materials and even give out REWARD CANDY!

There’s always something I forget to do.  If it isn’t the take home paper it’s the reward candy, if it isn’t the prayer card it’s the monthly bible verse (TOO MUCH STUFF) but with my helper it all got done.

Susan (not her real name) is far more mature than your average 7th grader.  She’s a perfect example of why home schooling is the way to go for those who can manage it.  I’d recommend it to any couple just starting out to aim for that ideal.  Because with more people like Susan around the world is a much better place!  🙂

Real Hope!

There’s real hope after all folks.

A new generation is rising up full of faith and full of worship and love for their creator.

All over the world in churches big and small people are dedicated to teaching, mentoring and disciplining the next generation for Christ.

This is where our new pastors, evangelists missionaries and all sorts of great leaders will be coming from.

This song is a favorite of mine. It’s the Hill song Kids with “Super Strong God!”

When I see all the kids at my church Grace North really worshiping God like the children in this video it brings tears to my eyes.

Chances are, the same thing happens to you.  🙂

The Clock is Ticking!

The clock is counting down!  Kid’s Fest is just two weeks away, when Operation Andrew goes into full swing!  And like everything else they do my kids are viewing it as a competition.

“I’m going to invite three friends!”

“Oh yeah!  Well, I’m going to invite 4!”

I’m ready for any questions parents might ask.  At least our church has a good web site so people know we’re all about keeping it real for God and nothing to do with brainwashing.

Besides, everyone knows our two children are normal.  My son loves The Lord but he also loves to watch WWE wrestling and play Pokemon on his Nintendo DS.

My daughter is just as apt to invite someone to roller skating and to a High School Musical Themed Party as she is to invite someone to church.

As for me, I’m pacing the floor.  Once again I’ve been drafted.  This time to help out with entertainment.  I’ll be doing a puppet show in two weeks.

Looks like all those crazy character voices I do will come in handy for something after all.

“Right Dimi!?  (High pitch) 🙂

“You said it, Elwood!”  (Throaty voice) 😉

My Worst Critic

Jesus said as recorded in Mathew 5,

“Blessed are the merciful for they will be shown mercy.”

Sometimes we’re merciful to everyone except us.  We’re our own worst critic.  Too many goals and too high standards can lead to people beating themselves up one side and down the other.  If we treated others the way we treat ourselves WE’D BE LOCKED UP FOR SURE!!!

Be merciful to yourself if you’ve had tough day yelling at your kids.

So what if you’re not super TV Cosby dad.

Real dads do what it they have to do and come back for more.

Screw ups fits and all.

Don’t be your worst critic, be your best friend!

My Holy Spirit Missions Buzz

The Holy Spirit
Image by Lawrence OP via Flickr

It was a Holy Spirit missions buzz, from a man named buzz.

Buzz Maxey was the guest speaker at church this morning for missions Sunday.  He is a missionary to Papua, Indonesia.

Throughout the years I’ve heard dozens of missionary sermons and after a while if you’re not careful you can become jaded.  They can all start to sound the same after a while.

“Yeah, yeah yeah!  We all need to ask God what is our part is in missions.”

Not yesterday!

Not after getting drafted (willingly) into ministry.  Yesterday while brother Buzz was preaching,

I got “buzzed” by The Holy Spirit!

It was more like . . .

You all need to ask God! (ZAP!)

What is your part

in missions?  (POW!)

So I did.  “God, what is my part in missions?”

Answer : “Think of ways to get the kids more involved in missions.”

Reply:  “YES LORD!  SIR!”

So after the service I touched base with our “KC” coordinator who told me she’s thinking on the same lines as me.

So we’ll see what we come up with.

Talk about a Holy Spirit missions buzz.  😉

Praying For A New School Year

Because of the address the president is giving school children on Tuesday it’s become even more important to pray for our schools now more than ever.  No matter what agenda the president may have we know who really has a plan for our children.  For “Greater is He (Jesus) who is in them (our kids) than he (the devil) who is in the world.”

Also, Tuesday is the start of the  new school year for most of the kids here in New York State.  So it’s time to say a prayer for all the school districts represented in my church, starting with the district my kids are in.

Feel free to add your own district in the reply section if you don’t see it here.
